Sustainable Commitment

Since 1948, BOX San Sebastiánhas been a family-owned leather goods company that designs and manufactures beautiful and functional leather bags and leather goods that can be repaired and passed down from generation to generation. The high quality of the materials we use, together with our exceptional craftsmanship and supported by the conceptual design of our creative direction, contribute to the durability of the pieces, characterized by a particular timeless distinction.

Our Origin is Sustainable

The concept of sustainability appears recurrently in many aspects of our lives. But while it is a widely used term, unfortunately its meaning is not always clear. For BOX San Sebastián, since 1948, sustainability means producing mainly leather goods, always respecting the limits of the planet, minimizing the use of resources, generating value for those who participate in our value chain, reducing environmental and social impacts.

“Our Common Future” is the report signed in Oslo on March 20, 1987, within the World Commission on Environment and Development. Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland gave its name to the Brundtland Report, which defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Our collections combine beauty, aesthetics and functionality.

Each piece is distinguished by its high final quality, the result of a long artisan know-how and by the adaptation to the specific uses that society demands. The laboratory-workshop located in San Sebastian ensures the repairability and sustainability of each piece. The highest quality of our materials, together with the deep craftsmanship and innovation in cleaner production, are a guarantee of durability of each bag and accessory we produce.
BOX San Sebastián aims to minimize its impact on the Planet from the respect for nature, giving value to renewable natural resources and contributing to economic activity and the maintenance of rural habitats.

“Leather is a durable material and allows a prolonged use of the product, extending its useful life, which leads to reduced CO2 emissions, lower consumption of water and other natural resources”.

Leather is the primary and basic material for BOX San Sebastian and we are committed to ensuring that it is sourced in the most responsible and sustainable manner. Our leathers are sourced from tanneries with whom we have had a relationship for over 40 years and all of whom are part of the Leather Working Group, an international non-profit organization responsible for the world’s largest leather sustainability program. LWG aims to improve the environmental impact of the leather industry by assessing and certifying leather manufacturers.

At BOX San Sebastian we decided to progressively replace virgin synthetic fibers with recycled materials. This commitment, allowed us since January 2019, to be one of the pioneering brands in the luxury leather goods sector, partnering with Aquafil, a world leader in the production of sustainable synthetic fibers. Since that year, our entire collection is lined inside with an ECONYL® fabric lining, an innovative nylon fiber 100% regenerated from waste, such as the collection of fishing nets at sea, abandoned or disused, old carpets and other nylon waste, which can be recycled infinitely, without ever losing its quality.

We also extend our commitment to sustainable sourcing to a distinctive element of our brand image: packaging. Our famous boutique bag was designed in 1999 and is a reproduction of a handbag, made in a partner textile workshop and is made from 100% recycled and biodegradable textile material (see “labels” certifications).

The protective bags of our bags are made of 100% regenerated nylon ECONYL® and all our leather goods boxes are made in proximity with paper and cardboard that are 100% recyclable and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council ® ; also the felt that we use to put inside our boxes comes from a natural resource such as wool, naturally renewable and certified Environmental Product Declaration ®.

BOX San Sebastian is present in different communities of Spain. 100% of our work and collection is Made in Spain. The company contributes to the active revitalization in each territory where it is present, supporting each employee to integrate into the local social and cultural ecosystem, as part of the commitment to transmit the entrepreneurial culture and savoir-faire to the new generations of craftsmen.

BOX San Sebastian maintains a solid relationship with its suppliers, with an average of more than forty years of connection with its 12 main collaborators. The roots of these alliances, based on shared values, guarantee the solidity and the important traceability and transparency of its activity.

Patronage commitment with two reference NGOs

Ocean Care is the motto with which BOX San Sebastián has defined since 2019 the commitment acquired with the society to protect the planet. In addition to reducing our ecological footprint, for BOX San Sebastián it is essential that this project is reflected in society.

Since 2019, we have acquired a sponsorship commitment with two leading NGOs in research and conservation of the planet: Aranzadi Zientzia Elkartea and Surfrider Europe.

We allocate a portion of the price of each product sold from our collection to both NGOs.
